The Wîhkwêntôwin Community League is planning for the future. Our last community interest survey was conducted during the pandemic and we wanted to help the league prioritize what we do the next few years. Things have changed significantly since then and we want to hear from folks in the neighbourhood. We reached out to our community again about their interests to help us plan future programs, activities and events.
We conducted this survey during November and December, 2024, promoting it through our newsletter and social media platforms. We offered a draw prize of five $50 gift cards as an incentive. 81 community members completed the survey, which is a good response based on our previous experience. Stay tuned for the next one and we hope to increase our participation numbers!
Highlights
For the purposes of our planning, the following highlights could help to inform future directions.
- Outdoor performances/events are the most popular activities in which people have participated and the activities in which people are most interested. This may in part be due to us not having a building and why folks did not express interest in indoor physical activities.
- Consideration for future activities should be given to multi-cultural events, block parties, exchanges and swaps, and presentations/lectures.
- The most common reason cited for not participating in activities and events was lack of time, which we can’t control. However, consideration should be given to promotion; 48% cited not knowing about happenings. “Nothing of interest” was cited by 27%, which relates to the consideration above. 22% cited “wouldn’t know anyone” which we may in part be able to address in how we promote events and in making people feel welcome and comfortable when attending our activities.
- Most people wanted to see events every 1-2 months, which we are currently delivering.
- People would like to see more events focused on cultural celebrations and holidays (65%) and newcomers (33%).
- Physical amenities most people said they would use if provided were benches/picnic tables (64%) and fire pits (53%) followed by skating rink (44%) and multi-use courts (43%).
- Our newsletter appears to be the most effective means of promotion, with 62% learning of our activities there, followed by Instagram (37%).
- The most common modes of transport in the past 3 months were walking (98%), driving (70%) and public transit (52%). 75% of respondents walk or drive to work. The preferred methods of transport cited were walking (56%), cycling (17%) and driving (17%).
